Jolly Phonics Lesson – The Long Vowels with the Magic “e”
Revise the long vowels:
ai ee ie oa ue
Read the words:
rain, trail, paint
tree, meet, eel
pie, lie, tried
goat, road, foam
cue, value, statue
The Magic “e” Rule
When there is an “e” at the end of the word, it makes the vowel long and we don’t read it.
How does it work? The magic “e” hits the vowel with its magic wand and says: “Say your name!”
In fact we pronounce the long vowel with its letter name.
There are different ways to spell the long vowels. The standard one and with the magic ”e”. Look and say:
ai – a_e
ee – e_e
ie – i_e
oa – o_e
ue – u_e

2. eve, Steve, athlete;
3. kite, bike, ride;
4. rope, stone, joke;
5. tune, prune, flute.

Print out the two tables. Read the words in the first table. Cut them out and put them in the correct group in the second table:
